Lawless Healing Roots: A New Chapter

A name can be a doorway, and ours finally matches what we’ve been building for decades. We’re Marilisa Lawless and Melinda Lawless Coker, and we’re sharing how Lawless Healing Roots grew from a long-standing therapy practice into a full, grounded umbrella that includes psychotherapy, coaching, energy work, herbalism, psychodrama, crystals, and hemp-based CBD support, all held with care, ethics, and real-world experience.
Our story starts with our mom, Marianne Lawless, who helped establish our roots back in 1991 with a bold idea: mothers and daughters can build something lasting, healing, and professional together. We talk about what she taught us, what we still carry, and the line she repeated to every client: “take care of yourself.” We also get honest about how hard self-care can be for helpers, why “coming back to the table” is what separates functional from stuck, and how grounding keeps us steady when life pushes for change.
We also unpack the branches that grew along the way: Hemp Del Soul (including the true story of testing CBD with our arthritic dog), Crystals Del Soul and why clients are drawn to the energy of the space, and our newer “parlor” offerings like Reiki circles, tarot, and mediumship. If you’re searching for holistic healing, integrative therapy, metaphysical wellness tools, or telehealth coaching that isn’t cookie-cutter, you’ll hear exactly how we think about blending paths while keeping the goal simple: connection and peace that fits your life. Subscribe, share with someone who needs it, and leave a review to help more people find the roots.
Welcome And What We Hold
Speaker 1Welcome to the Lawless Healing Roots Podcast. I'm your host, Marilisa Lawless. A psychotherapist, energy worker, and someone who spent more than three decades guiding people to find their way back to themselves. This show is where the whole picture lives. Therapy, coaching, crystals, energy work, and every conversation in between. Because healing was never meant to fit inside just one box. So take a breath, get comfortable, and let's get into it. Welcome to the Lawless Healing Roots Podcast, bringing you into our space. I am Marilisa Lawless. I am a psychotherapist, I am a metaphysical practitioner, and an herbalist.
SpeakerAnd I am Melinda Lawless Coker. I'm a psychologist, family therapist, and psychodramatist.
The Name Change And Why
SpeakerAnd you might have noticed that we've had a name change. We are now Lawless Healing Roots, and we began as the transformation project, and then we added in Hemp del Soul and Crystals del Soul. And there are more roots to describe to you, but I'm going to pass it back to my sister.
Speaker 1So we're going to share a little bit about the founding of who we are. It started with our mom, Marianne Lawless. And Melinda and her went one day to look for an office and found this space in downtown Davy. That was in 91? Yes. Yeah, 1991. The summer of 91. So we've been around a really long time. Yes, we have. And we love decades. And we do love what we do. So it's made it very easy to do this transition. Marianne believed in creating a family-owned business with mothers and daughters. She had said initially, there's so many businesses that are fathers and sons. Why can't mothers and daughters do it? And that started the transformation project. She passed on in 2011, but left these amazing roots. And we have continued to blossom as a business and wanted to share more about who we are and why we do what we do. So Melinda and I have continued to grow, continue to change. Marianne was this one of her famous expressions that she said every single time to every single client that she had was take care of yourself. And that is something that we have tried to do throughout time. We've tried to continue to do those things to take care of ourselves. Do you have any mom things? I know we called her Mary Ann because it was business. We had to change, it was work. We couldn't say, hey mom. We had to transition to calling her by her first name. A lot of people thought it was strange, but it worked for us. And Marianne was a powerhouse, uh, a force to be reckoned with when it came to healing.
SpeakerAnd creativity. She's one of the more creative women I've ever known in terms of uh how she could uh do a specific thing in the course of therapy, which was reframing. She could reframe the I don't know, the heck out of something. Just pick something that didn't sound so lovely, and she would reframe it into something that was useful and practical and meaningful.
Speaker 1And it's funny because one of the things I'll say about her is that used to aggravate us that she was always right. We hated it, but it was amazing. She was an amazing human being, an amazing healer. And we have continued to grow and to add to our wheelhouse, and that's where the name change came in. So Lawless Healing Roots is who we are today. We started as the transformation project, but we are continuing to change and move into the 21st century. Is this part of who we are? And part of what we is what we've always done.
SpeakerAnd lawless healing roots is more of a uh it's an umbrella term. It uh covers everything that we're already doing. And part of what's happening is we have named ourselves, kind of like calling it out and saying that this is who we are today. Absolutely. Yeah, and so part of this process includes us getting grounded in the transition that we have been in. The transition is ongoing, we are um very clearly expanding and uh staying rooted, very grounded. It I know grounded is one of your terms.
Speaker 1Yes, it's a really big deal for Melinda to always be grounded, and I am in my head, I work on being grounded, and it's something that she uses as a lot of tools. So I've always appreciated that about you.
SpeakerYeah, well, I just grounded myself by shifting my position.
Speaker 1Okay.
Marianne’s Legacy Of Self-Care
SpeakerIt doesn't always work for the camera.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's true. So our mom, while she was an amazing therapist, she really struggled with self-care herself. I think that that's part of why this was her mantra. And as I grew as a professional, I moved into a lot of metaphysical things. I started doing alternative healing practices when I saw that so many people were coming in with pharmaceuticals. So I started to shift. But I had been doing all of these alternative healing things for myself. And there was a time where I looked at her, and I know I've told you this story, that I she made a she made fun of me at one point and said, You do all these alternative things, and I just don't get it. Because I would go to a chiropractor, I would go for acupuncture, I would take herbs, I would do all of these things. And I turned and looked at her and I said, Because you're the perfect example of what not to do for self-care. She called me fresh, we laughed and moved forward. And part of why I even tell that story is because it really lets everybody know that we're human, we have lives, we have our own issues, but we keep coming back to the table to try and figure things out. And that really is the definition between functional and not functional or dysfunctional family, is that we keep coming back to the table to try and figure it out. So I shifted more into the metaphysical, and I know that you shifted more into the psychodrama, and you're also very good with metaphysical stuff too. Oh yeah. But that's part of why I think we do what we do, is because we continually grow, we're continuing, continually learning more and more. Even if our paths are slightly different, we're still on the same, we still have the same trajectory. It's still about healing. And our tree of life, well, we've had a lot of our own, we've had a lot of our own stumbles, true things that have happened. We have continued to to water these roots. So the tree has really blossomed into this amazing life that we have and family.
When Pain Pushes Real Change
Speaker 1So one of the things that Marianne had said very early on in the development of the business was this phrase that we actually put on business cards and used to hand out to people. And still today, 35 years later, we still have people that come back and say that this is an expression that grabbed them. When the pain of your pain is greater than the pain of change, you will change.
SpeakerYeah. And the whole process of changing can be painful and challenging. Absolutely. And it's uh something we often have to prepare ourselves for, and there's a whole whole bit around how it is that we move into change, and in our work, that meant that we had to make changes ourselves, you know, that that's where some of it began. And then that included the changes that happened within our work around businesses, and uh because we began, as we've already said, as a transformation project, and now we're recognizing and naming lawless healing roots as where we have been.
Hemp CBD And Learning The Facts
Speaker 1Absolutely, and part of that transition, even from the transformation project, wasn't a name change, but it was adding things to what it is that we do. So in 2018, we added hemp del sole. Started with our other sister researching all of these different CBD products, hemp-based CBD products.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1For me, it was really important to educate myself about hemp because I've been in recovery. I wasn't interested in marijuana, even though both of them are listed as cannabis, a lot of the times, hemp is not a drug, it was a supplement. So I did a lot of education around it, and we decided we experimented on the dog first. Because the dog was arthritic and you know, twinky. She was like, Leave me alone, I don't want to go anywhere. And after three days of taking the CBD on her food, it she was like, Oh, let's go for a walk. Oh, let's go. And so she had a good last year of her life because she actually had energy and felt better.
Crystals As A Healing Tool
Speaker 1So from that, part of what we always had in our office and in our in our separate offices were crystals. I've always liked crystals, I've always had them around, and it wasn't really a thing. It wasn't a store, it wasn't an actual store. People would buy things randomly if they came in, but it wasn't a store. Once we added the CBD, we're like, okay, we need a store. So we had added another bay to where we were, and from adding that bay, we made it a store, and so we had hemp del soul, and we used SOUL because it truly came from the heart of our soul. It was something the pure energy, the pure energy of the soul, and the intentions were good, and it was about decreasing pharmaceuticals as a first response to trying to heal. And everybody has some healing to do, and everybody does it differently. Therapy was one way, some people preferred herbals, some people prefer the church, some people everybody chooses a different way to heal the hurts that they've experienced. And we all have hurts. There's none of us that escape this lifetime without some injury, and it it is about how we heal.
SpeakerRight. So, this is how crystals started to become even a bigger thing for us because we uh use them in the course of healing. Absolutely have so many healing properties. I never knew there were so many different kinds of crystals. It's amazing the amount of stones there are and varieties, and and so many of them are focused on healing and helping us to ground and to be okay.
Speaker 1And what I found fascinating is that clients would come in, they would want to just sit in the store where the crystals were. Sometimes we sat on the floor just to be around the crystals because they could feel the energy that just felt positive, healing, soothing, whatever it was. I even had experiences of sitting on the floor and dumping baskets of crystals and with a client who wanted to do some inner child work, so she used them as a a toy, like marvels almost. Um you know, so we used them. It was fun. So as we've transitioned in the past year, we've had to move
The Parlor And Metaphysical Work
Speaker 1into a completely new space. Oh, wait.
SpeakerSo something that Marilisa that you've talked about many times is about having a metaphysical healing center and looking for one and looking and looking. Here we are. We have arrived.
Speaker 1Our parlor, and we will share that at a later date, but our parlor is a very healing space. We do Reiki circles, we have a tarot card reader that's here, we have a medium that does healing work with mediumship and different psychic abilities, and I've been training to do all these things myself. And we're pretty good at it, and it's fun, it's fun, yeah. And yet it's also healing, and it brings closure to people that have left open wounds, and the parlor is a place to sit and work on your own healing. While we understand that not everybody can make it here into this space, we do offer it on telehealth.
Coaching And Telehealth Support
Speaker 1That's one of the reasons we started the lawless coaching. Right. So we have Lawless Coaching 1111, is another another branch of the tree and the things that we do. So the lawless coaching opened it up to a worldwide experience. And while we have the transformation project, is still here, Hemp del Soul and Crystals Del Soul, we have all of these things that are still a part of or a branch of Lawless Healing Roots. We do a little bit of everything. We don't do cookie cutter work. Every person is an individual, every person comes in with something different and wants to heal in a different way.
SpeakerYeah. Where are we? We are ready. We are ready for sharing this whole process, which is what we're doing. And uh this it's our time to uh tell you more about lawless healing roots and how we uh have something to offer you, and how through our own healing, our own healing roots, healing our lives, it has given us the security, the safety, the confidence.
Speaker 1Foundation, the foundation, the roots to be able to offer it to anybody who walks through our door, anyone who reaches out to us on a uh one of our websites, anybody that wants to just connect, because at the end of the day, connection is what we've got, and finding some sort of peace, tranquility in our lives is different for everybody. You know, and where we want to move forward.
What We’re Sharing Next
Speaker 1We are going to continue this conversation, we're gonna tell you more with each episode about something different that we do. And we invite you to join each. We're gonna let you know more about crystals, we're gonna let you know more about CBD and how it might be helpful.
SpeakerWe will let you know about yes, we are going to do psychodrama, we're going to have fun with that one, and there will be multiple episodes to share the magic of psychodrama.
Speaker 1And it's something that you are amazing at, and you do it in in the industry industrial world as well as in the psychotherapy world. So it's an amazing skill. It can be used anywhere. Right. So I look forward to multiple episodes. I'll be watching those too. I'm Marilisa Lawless. And I am Melinda Lawless Coker. And we are Lawless Healing Roots. We thank you for joining us and look forward to our next episode with you. See you soon.
